     Scleroderma is a debilitating autoimmune disease unknown to most people.  It causes the immune system to produce collagen, which is scar tissue.  This damages the internal organs and scars the skin and organs.  It is sometimes referred to as the “stone disease”. Currently there is no cure for scleroderma, and the cause of it is not known. Research is vital in getting to the bottom of this disease.

     My mother, Starr, passed away from complications from scleroderma April 24, 2002.   Her skin was tough and scarred and she suffered from kidney failure.  Her hands were unable to bend or straighten out completely.  She was on dialysis for almost seven years.  Before going on disability she had a successful career as a school counselor.  She went above the call of duty, inviting special needs hildren to our home, believing in and giving hope to lots of “at risk” kids.  These kids had been given up on  by everyone else but her kindness showed them that they had worth.  Mom has made such a difference in so many peoples lives and I have been so blessed to have her as my mother.  She taught us that doing simple things can change someone’s life forever.
